The number one reason beginners quit AI tools is not that the tools are bad. It is that there are too many of them. Every list promises fifty tools, you try six, master none, and go back to doing everything manually.

This guide takes the opposite approach. Four jobs. One tool each. All free. By the end of one week, you will have actually used all four to make something real.

The toolkit: one tool per job

Writing — ChatGPT (free tier). Start here because writing is the skill every other AI job builds on. Scripts, captions, emails, video ideas: ChatGPT drafts all of them. The beginner formula is simple — give it a role, a task and your audience. "You are a YouTube scriptwriter. Write a 60-second script about morning routines for busy students." Specific beats clever every time.

Images — Microsoft Designer / Image Creator (free). The easiest free image generator to start with. Sign in with a Microsoft account and describe what you want in plain words: "a cozy coffee shop corner, warm light, watercolor style." You will get usable images in seconds. Use them for thumbnails, social posts and blog headers while you learn what good prompts look like.

Video — CapCut (free). The best free starting point for video because it is an editor and an AI toolkit in one. Auto-captions, text-to-speech, background removal and templates — all free. Record a clip on your phone, drop it into CapCut, add auto-captions, and you have a finished short video. Nothing teaches AI video faster than finishing actual videos.

Voice — CapCut text-to-speech (free) or ElevenLabs (free tier). If you dislike recording your voice, AI voices solve it. CapCut's built-in text-to-speech is unlimited and fine for drafts and shorts. When you need a more natural voice for a real project, ElevenLabs' free monthly allowance covers several videos. Type your script, pick a voice, download the audio.

That is the whole toolkit. Resist the urge to add a fifth tool until you have used these four for a month.

Your one-week plan

Days 1–2: Writing. Ask ChatGPT to write three things you actually need this week — a caption, an email, a video outline. Edit each one by hand. Notice where the AI is strong (structure, ideas) and where it is weak (your voice, real details). That judgment is the real skill.

Days 3–4: Images. Generate ten images in Microsoft Designer for a real project — thumbnails, a profile banner, post graphics. Try the same idea in three different styles. Save what works. You are building taste, not just images.

Day 5: Video. Make one short video end to end in CapCut. Phone footage, auto-captions, one AI voice or your own, done. It does not need to be good. It needs to be finished.

Days 6–7: Combine everything. Make one small project that uses all four tools: a short video with an AI-written script, AI-generated thumbnail, CapCut edit and an AI voiceover. This is the moment it clicks — you will see the full pipeline working, and you will know exactly which tool to reach for next time.

Three beginner mistakes to avoid

Collecting tools instead of finishing projects. A beginner with four tools and ten finished projects beats a beginner with forty tools and zero projects. Master this stack first.

Trusting the first output. AI drafts are starting points. The people getting real results from AI tools all do the same thing: generate, then edit with judgment. Your taste is the product; the AI is the assistant.

Ignoring the free limits. Free tiers have daily or monthly ceilings. Plan around them: generate in batches, save your best outputs, and never build a deadline around a tool's free credits running out mid-project.

What comes next

After a month with this toolkit, you will know exactly what to learn next — because your own work will tell you. Maybe your scripts need better prompts. Maybe your images need a stronger generator. That is the right time to explore. But this week, keep it simple: four tools, seven days, one finished project. Start today.
